About Songscription
Songscription is a music-learning AI lab that raised a $5M seed led by Reach Capital (with Emerge Capital, 10x Founders, Dent Capital, and angel Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal of Guns N' Roses). It came out of Stanford's StartX, founded by Andrew Carlins (CEO, Stanford MBA), Alex Alvarado-Barahona (CTO), Katie Baker, and Tim Beyer — whose music-AI research cracked the audio-to-MIDI problem the company is built on. The traction is the real headline: 150,000+ users across 150 countries at 60% month-over-month growth, all organic with zero marketing spend. Songscription is the "Shazam for sheet music" — upload any audio or YouTube link and get back accurate sheet music, MIDI, MusicXML, Guitar Pro tabs, or an interactive piano roll in minutes, across nine instruments. Its second product, Anything Piano, is an iOS app that lets anyone upload a song and learn it through a piano roll with real-time feedback. Under the hood is proprietary transcription AI solving a problem that stumped music-information-retrieval research for decades. Internally the two products sit under a parent, Play Anything (not publicly advertised). The team is small, fast, and based in San Francisco.

About This Role

Songscription is hiring a Growth Engineer to own the technical side of its growth engine — strategizing, building, and shipping the PLG mechanics, SEO/AEO infrastructure, conversion tooling, lifecycle automation, and analytics that power the next phase of growth. The framing Andrew gave is a spectrum from engineer to artist: this role sits firmly on the engineer side — someone who can actually build and ship the interventions, not a viral-marketing/ads person (they don't need this person to optimize ads or make content). The mandate is structured funnel optimization: Andrew believes revenue can be 20–50% higher with zero product/AI changes, purely through smart, structured A/B testing.

The loop is the job: given a metric to optimize (e.g., churn), figure out why — read reports, hop on user calls, use the product — decide the intervention (product change, pricing/packaging, UX), code it up, run the A/B test, measure, and iterate. Success at six months = builds/changes directly attributable to an extra ~20%+ month-over-month growth. The hard part, per Andrew, is UI/UX intuition fully implemented — statistics and dashboards are the easy part; what's scarce is someone who can stand behind a real, well-reasoned intervention that doesn't look one-shot-through-Claude. They'll also build analytics dashboards for existing UGC/paid ads (measure, not optimize), and may get pulled into more product-leaning work (mini-games as top-of-funnel, programmatic SEO — a page per song/comparison). The role spans web today, and the (gamier) mobile app over time.

What You'll Do

  • Own the technical growth work that moves core business metrics; build/maintain a growth model across acquisition, activation, retention, monetization, and referral
  • The full loop: pick the intervention (product / pricing / UX) for a given metric, build it, A/B test, measure, iterate; define success metrics before shipping
  • Product-led growth: sharing mechanics, referral/UGC programs, in-product conversion flows, activation-funnel experimentation
  • Analytics & experimentation: growth dashboards, A/B tests, full-funnel + retention reporting (incl. for existing UGC/paid ads)
  • Lifecycle & retention: email flows on activation/milestone/churn signals; cohort drop-off → product-side interventions
  • SEO & content infrastructure: technical and programmatic SEO/AEO (e.g., a page per song, mini-games as top-of-funnel)

Requirements

  • Strong coding fundamentals across frontend, backend, and analytics — can actually - build and ship interventions (not plot/vibe-code them)
  • Real full-stack ability to execute product changes, especially front-end / UI/UX-heavy work — the scarce, most-valued skill (though not a designer)
  • Strong on A/B testing, funnel optimization, statistics, and dashboards
  • AI-assisted, but owns the output — accountable for strong implementation

Execution and Ownership

  • Loves consumer growth and analytics; obsesses over user analytics and data
  • Can be handed a metric and full data/customer access and go optimize it end to end — no management/engineering debt
  • Moves fast, takes ownership, creative and data-driven; grit and curiosity over years of experience

Nice-to-Have

  • Gaming / games-industry growth experience
  • Passion for / connection to music (plays, makes — not required, but Andrew values genuine product excitement)
  • Lifecycle tooling, programmatic SEO/AEO experience

Who Will Thrive Here

  • A product engineer who loves growth — rare, and exactly the profile
  • Someone who owns a metric end to end: diagnoses, builds the intervention, A/B tests, iterates
  • Strong UI/UX-implementation intuition, data-obsessed, fast, high-ownership
  • A gaming-background builder used to relentless A/B testing
  • Genuinely excited by the music-learning product; trustworthy and ethical
