Forward Deployed Engineer (Full-Stack)
- Full-stack web developer building and maintaining production web applications.
- Production full-stack web development experience
- Comfortable being boots on the ground (factory)
Forge’s factory relies on homegrown software and has a growing backlog of operational problems that do not arrive with product specifications. The company needs an engineer who can turn floor-level manufacturing feedback into useful software rather than relying on additional process or manual work.
You’ll spend roughly 75% of your time building product and 25% on the factory floor with machinists and mechanical engineers. Day to day, you’ll maintain Forge’s instant-quoting platform, ship new features, build internal tools, and identify problems directly with users on the floor. The primary spike is improving the software that helps Forge’s manufacturing process move faster, while validating that what you build works in the factory. You’ll also own production uptime for the web platform when issues arise.
What You'll Own
- Maintain Forge’s instant-quoting platform and ship new features.
- Build internal tools that accelerate Forge’s manufacturing workflow.
- Spend regular time on the factory floor collecting feedback from machinists and mechanical engineers.
- Prioritize and solve operational problems without relying on a detailed product specification.
- Validate shipped tools in the factory and iterate based on user feedback.
- Own production uptime for the web platform, including restoring service when it goes down.
Technical Requirements
- Production full-stack web development experience.
- Ability to work in a homegrown ERP, quoting platform, and internal software stack.
- Node.js experience is representative of the technical background Forge is seeking.
Execution and Ownership
- Prototype quickly, put tools in front of users, and iterate from direct feedback.
- Operate effectively when requirements are discovered on the factory floor rather than handed over as a complete specification.
- Carry work through from identifying a problem to shipping and confirming adoption or operational impact.
- Be prepared to take responsibility for production uptime of the web platform.
Background
- Approximately 1–3 years of experience, including strong early-career candidates.
- Co-op or internship experience is preferred.
Location and Visa
- Toronto, Ontario; the role is fully in person at Forge’s factory and requires a daily commute.
- No visa sponsorship is available; candidates must already have authorization to work in Canada.
Nice to Have
- University of Waterloo co-op background.
- Experience at Toronto technology companies such as Shopify, Wealthsimple, or Lyft.
- FIRST Robotics experience.
- Hardware tinkering or physical side projects, including Arduino-based projects.
- Experience building software for or alongside physical systems.
Who Will Thrive Here This role suits builders who want to move from software into hardware and enjoy being close to the physical result of their work. You’ll thrive if you approach machinists with humility, want to understand how parts are actually made, and are motivated to build tools that make their work better rather than redesigning the process without context.
